June 28th, 2006 was supposed to be the day that everything changed for the NBA. After two years of secret preparation, the league issued a joint press release with Spalding extolling the values of their "New Ball" made with vegan Cross Traxxion (tm, obviously) technology and a curious seam placement.

Spalding spent many hours and dollars on research but unfortunately forgot to test on NBA players. Ralph Nader (yes, that Ralph Nader) and the NBPA got involved and sent a scathing letter to David Stern. The new ball was withdrawn.

The ball changed again in 2021, when Spalding's deal expired and Wilson took over. This time, the players were notified in advance.
