First Republic sold wealthy people the idea that banking could feel like a very quiet hotel lobby. Then depositors got nervous, the lobby emptied out, and the FDIC took the bank over.

JPMorgan acquired most of the assets and assumed the deposits. This umbrella remains a useful reminder that confidence-driven institutions should maybe avoid weather metaphors.
